Unemployment and COBRA Benefits Extended Under the new federal stimulus bill, Uncle Sam will pick up 65 percent of the tab for COBRA health insurance premiums for up to nine months for people laid off between September 1, 2008, and December 31, 2009. The subsidy is available only to those without another source of group health insurance. Currently Wisconsin provides a maximum Unemployment Benefit of $363 a week for up to 26 weeks, with extended benefits of up to 33 weeks. An additional $25 / week increase in benefits also went into effect in February as part of the federal stimulus. And, in 2009, a new federal income tax break exempts the first $2,400 of unemployment benefits.
